Neck Pain

Neck pain is very common in today's society and is the second most frequent complaint we deal with here at the clinic. There are many causes of neck pain such as whiplash, poor posture, disc injury, arthritis, trauma and muscle/ligament strain/sprain.

As the amount of time people now spend using smartphones and laptops we are seeing an increasing amount of neck pain being caused due to looking at screens with poor posture for prolonged periods of time.

Signs and symptoms associated with neck pain:

  • Headaches.

  • Pins and needles in arms/hands.

  • Numbness in your arms/hands.

  • Reduced movement in your neck.

  • Tight neck and upper back muscles.

  • Shoulder, Elbow or Wrist pain may stem from the neck.

Forward Head Posture

This is by far the most common cause of neck pain that we find in our clinic. Forward head posture can be defined as "failure of the head the align with the vertical axis of the body". This basically means that the head is being carried too far forward relative to the shoulders.

Forward head posture has been linked to computer use, backpack carriage and use of smart phones.

It can lead to headaches, tight upper body muscles, neck pain, upper back pain, limited range of movement and shoulder pain, increased kyphosis (commonly referred to as a Dowager's hump).
